What is LASIK Eye Surgery?
LASIK surgery is a procedure that corrects abnormalities in the eye to improve your vision. LASIK can correct conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. With LASIK surgery, many of our patients walk away with 20/20 vision and all of the conveniences that come along with better sight. Never worry about forgetting your glasses or needing to maintain proper hygiene with your contact lenses again. At Cornea Consultants of Albany, we are happy to be able to give you back control of your sight.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for LASIK Surgery?
Are you a candidate for LASIK refractive surgery? LASIK surgery is effective once the eye is fully developed and vision is consistent. For that reason, patients who are candidates for LASIK must:
- Must be 18 years old
- Must have a stable, unchanging prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses
Furthermore LASIK patients must:
- Have good overall health
- Not be pregnant or nursing
- Have no eye diseases
If you believe you are a candidate for LASIK, your first step is to schedule an appointment with us. Dr. Cortese will thoroughly examine and test your eye to determine if refractive surgery is the right course of action and also which procedure would work best with your lifestyle. There are different procedures used to correct your vision, and your doctor will work with you so that you can make sure you are making the right choice to find the corrective method that works best for you. Once you are approved, Dr. Schultze or Dr. Eden will perform your surgery.

How Does Lasik Work?
LASIK surgery is one of the safest and most comfortable procedures you can undergo. Due to this, and its high success rate, LASIK is the most common procedure used to correct vision. In refractive surgeries, the laser reshapes the surface of your eye, improving the cornea so that light is properly focused on the retina. This allows you to see without using glasses or contact lenses. Each eye is done separately, and the procedure takes around five minutes for each eye. You will be asked to look directly into the laser for the length of the procedure, but it will be entirely painless; you may only feel some mild pressure on the eye. You can expect hazy and blurry vision immediately after receiving LASIK, but your vision will begin to improve almost immediately.
Is LASIK Surgery Painful?
When undergoing LASIK surgery, there are a few things you should know. First of all, the procedure will be painless – we promise! At most, you will feel some pressure once the surgery begins. The procedure is quick, and in most cases, we can do both of your eyes the same day if needed. Your eyes will be numbed with topical anesthesia in the form of eye drops so that you don’t feel any pain.
How Does a LASIK procedure work?
During the procedure, you will be sitting back in a comfortable reclining chair. You will be asked to focus on a light for the length of the procedure, but your surgeon will use an instrument to help keep your eyes open comfortably. You might notice a smell like burning hair while your surgeon is using the laser; this is completely normal and means that the laser is successful changing the shape of your cornea to allow you to see better. Each eye takes only about five minutes to successfully correct your vision.
With the femtosecond laser, the corneal flap can be cut with a precision that is unmatched by any mechanical blade. Your corneal flap will be created perfectly and smoothly with almost zero discomfort while you undergo the procedure. Complications with the LASIK procedure are extremely rare, however the metal blades used in traditional LASIK can create uneven flap edges, and an uneven flap edge can lead to abnormalities in the cornea. This can result in vision conditions like irregular astigmatism. All-laser LASIK results in even fewer complications that its conventional counterpart, making the procedure even safer so you can feel more comfortable the day of your surgery. Even though LASIK surgery is a recent innovation in the world of eye care, all-laser LASIK shows that the field is continuously improving and advancing to provide you the vision you want and need to live a happy and healthy life. Ask your physician at Cornea Consultants of Albany if the all-laser LASIK procedure can give you the sight you’ve always wanted.
What Should I Expect After LASIK Surgery?
After the surgery, your eyes may itch, burn, and be watery but remember that your eyes were just operated on so this is to be expected. Other than this discomfort, you should experience little pain after surgery although your vision will not be perfectly clear.
Lasik Recovery Time
LASIK in itself is a simple procedure, and it has a simple recovery to match. In most cases, vision is corrected in only a couple of days after surgery, and the recovery is very simple; we recommend that you rest as much as possible to allow the eye to heal quickly, but you will be able to return to your routine a day or two after having the procedure done. This simple procedure can have an enormous impact on your life. Consider LASIK surgery at Cornea Consultants of Albany as a means to correct your vision and improve the way you see the world.
How Long After a LASIK Procedure Will I See Results?
You will be able to see after your LASIK procedure, but it can take a couple of months for your vision to fully stabilize and improve.
What Will My LASIK Results Look Like?
Your results will depend on what your vision was like before surgery; if you had mild to moderate refractive error your vision will likely become just about perfect. If your refractive error was severe you may still need some type of spectacle to help your vision to become perfect, but your dependence on glasses will be greatly reduced.
Your satisfaction from your refractive surgery will likely be dependent on your expectations for your results. Refractive surgeries, like LASIK, will improve your vision so that daily tasks become possible without glasses or contact lenses. However, depending on the eye condition that has caused you to seek out refractive surgery, you may still need glasses for reading or distance driving. You should think of your refractive surgery as a means for you to reduce your dependency on glasses and lenses. The lasers used in refractive surgery are very precise, but patients can have varied visual results after their procedure. This occurs for many reasons, and not because something went wrong during their procedure. Different outcomes can occur because of differences in the degree of refractive error corrected, or in the individual healing process. LASIK and other refractive surgeries can lead to wonderful results, and at Cornea Consultants of Albany we want to help bring you those results by working with you to formulate the best plan
