CATARACT SURGERY

The eye is an incredibly remarkable organ that works very similar to a camera. Inside the eye is a lens: a clear structure located just behind the pupil. This lens focuses light onto the retina where images are collected and transmitted to the brain.

Many people think of a cataract as a milky film that covers the lens, but a cataract is actually a clouding of the lens of the eye itself, and this clouding will blur and distort images. Look through a window made of distorted or frosted glass and you will have an idea of what it means to see with cataracts.

The word “cataract” comes from the Greek word kataraktes, which refers to something that “rushes or swoops down.” This word was applied to cataracts in the eye as a metaphor for the clouding that “swoops in” and robs the eye of light. There are a variety of causes of cataracts including trauma from an injury or previous surgery, family genetics or certain medications, but most often cataracts are simply part of the normal aging process. By the age of 73, it is estimated that more than half of Americans will form cataracts, or will have already had cataract surgery.

As the lens ages and loses clarity, patients begin to experience “hazy” vision and light sensitivity. Seeing or reading in dim light or darkness becomes difficult, and distance vision, used for seeing road signs, slowly decreases to the point of becoming dangerous to drive. Many people are unaware they even have cataracts and believe that they are merely experiencing a decline in vision due to their age. Trying to correct cataracts with reading glasses does not do anything to improve the condition. Don’t limit what you can see by failing to check if your sight problems are a result of cataracts. This condition is very treatable, only requiring a minimally invasive surgery, with a very quick and easy recovery. With technology and surgical techniques continuously improving over the past few decades, there has never been a better time to seek treatment for cataracts.

Our surgeons use only the very best system, Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA), to provide an intraoperative measurement to determine the precise lens implant power needed in your eye. The physicians at Cornea Consultants of Albany have been performing cataract surgery for decades using state-of-the-art technology and methods that not only repair sight, but drastically improve it.
